A friend asked about this, so I thought I’d do a little post. Ubuntu has become one of the more popular Linux builds as its very easy to use, you can test it by running it from a CD, and you can get the CD for free. (etc etc)

After you test it, Install will partition your drive and allow you to dual boot Windows, if you so choose. So you could for example use Ubuntu for safe web surfing, email, and so forth. Then Windows for dedicated stuff there. But Ubuntu of course comes with Firefox, Open Office (I’ve talked about here), and hundreds of programs you can install, simply by browsing the program manager. Unlike Windows or Mac, Ubuntu checks and updates ALL of your software as required.

It will also import your settings, music and data from Windows and is far more customizable out of the box.  Like other Linux builds, its had multiple desktops for years.
