Virus Alert – Conficker

Tomorrow, April 1, what has been described as the worst computer virus infection in about 5 years is set to begin to go “on line”.

If your Windows is up to date (including patch 958644) and your anti-virus is current, you should be fine. This one is an issue for people who don’t update or have a pirate copy of Windows so can’t.

If you are infected, any attempts to make these updates are usually blocked. Thus, many of the online instructions are useless. You have to get the fixes to the computer externally. Instructions are here: (see How to update section)

Millions of computers are infected. Security experts shut down the global domains that were being called by the first 2 versions but the third version contacts a half million domains. No way to figure out which is real.

It’s not a hoax. There’s been a huge effort to control it. Infected computers are basically remote controllable to do the bot nets bidding, including lifting information, email addresses, and using your connection to spam, infect others or attack other sites. Much spam today comes from bot nets, which is why its still coming. The intentions of this bot net are not yet known.  It will probably take days for all the systems to join so some lag before it’s used. May simply be a big spike in spam. They may try to take down sections of the internet.

Keep yourself up to date and you should be fine.
