Temperament

Understanding who and how you are and what you have to offer is a big part of finding a fulfilling life and a place in society. Yet we often discover such things by happenstance or difficult experience. Most of what we’re given is generic rules and training that rarely suits us.

Often, we don’t entirely recognize our own abilities and temperament because they’re innate and we assume our experience is similar to others. Yet how we’re distinct points to what we have to offer.

This is where aptitude and related testing can shine a light for us. But testing without temperament can put you on the wrong track. I spent some decades taking pokes at a desired and recommended career goal before I finally realized it required a specific temperament I didn’t have.

The psychologist Carl Jung observed 3 personality polarities in the 1920’s, then his daughter added the 4th. The Myers-Briggs mother-daughter team extrapolated that into the Myers-Briggs test (MBTI). Various versions of mixed quality have shown up over the years and on-line.

Jung went on to develop the Jungian Archetypes from his research, a more symbolic approach to the memes underlying traits.

MBTI is essentially our preferences in how we see the world and make decisions. Some polarities can be quite strong and others less so, though we tend to moderate with age. The results also tend to evolve over time. While not seen as entirely reliable, many find them quite insightful.

It’s worth noting that the personality types are not evenly distributed in the population.

The full MBTI test is a 6 hour affair where you not only get to know your own type but your contrast with others of each of the opposite polarities. You can also get tested personally by certified testers.

Over the years, I’ve taken the full test and tried a few free on-line tests. One’s I found insightful:

Humanmetrics has a Jungian version.

Keirsey developed a variant based more on behavior and shifted the emphasis a bit. That has a test here.

And recently, I ran into another variant “16 Personalities” that adds a 5th polarity: Assertive/Turbulent.

(I didn’t have any trouble with any of these sites abusing my contact info)

After testing, I’ve also found these profiles useful.

Have fun with it.

  1. Hi David!

    very interesting!!

Did the “16 Personalities” test…..i am a “The Logician” (INTP-A) Type.
Will look into the other test aswell.

I think writing about such tests would also be good on your davidya blog…..helps to make such things more clear or bring things into more conscious awareness.

    warmly

  2. Hi Michael
Sometimes, there’s a gray area – which blog to post it on? Occasionally, I’ve posted things on both. But now I have these posts listed on Davidya, so I don’t usually.

But I agree. Becoming aware of our talents, temperament, and so forth is very useful for living a skilled life. Our qualities can be least obvious to us sometimes as we live in them.

  3. I’m an INTJ, the system builder or architect. The 16 test rated me an INFJ-A, the Advocate. That’s a role that’s become more prominent over time but INTJ is probably the more accurate.

The variation is in places where we’re closer to the centre. I’m very N so would always test that way. I’m also very I, but have gradually moderated with age. The T and J parts though are moderate. This varies.

  5. I am on work and can not watch the vid. I will when i am at home. thanks!
I am an ISFP but can switch easily to an INFP. (S is more dominant but S is still Close)

Funny Thing about this is when we experience that we are not the personality and the tests are all written like we are the personilty 🙂

I can easily see how releasing of imprinting and waking up changes the pesonality in deep ways. 10 Years back and my Profile would have been very different. Some abilities/parts come online which lay totally dormant, others where there but became stronger, still other parts vanish away.
What i have found is that especially after the deeper selfbarriers (sometimes called Holding Patterns) are released one can Switch much more easily between personalitytypes/styles. One still has preferred modes but becomes much more flexilbe. Still suprise my wife after 9 years 😉

    all the best

  6. I’m very strongly N. Used to be stronger I but am less so now.
Right – still it is very useful to recognize what you have to work with here. (laughs)

Yes. I was surprised what faded out and what amplified. Some of that is also cycles of time but yes, embodiment has a bigger impact.

Agreed on the flexibility. What has also struck me is how the very awake that I know sometimes become much more distinct in their personalities.

  7. Yes agreed. A paradox here. Even though we become more flexible we also become more distinct in our personality (or i would say expression of it) with deeper clearing and further deepening. I guess divinity likes uniqueness 😉

  8. btw… good song! Could relate to some parts of it quite well 🙂

  9. Yes – uniqueness is the point. Each of us bringing a unique perspective of the whole in the process of Self-knowing. If we where the same, we would have nothing to add.

  10. That would mean that those who are advanced in their awakening process and really have taken out a lot of trash (like that wording from you 🙂 should really listen to those who are also far along the path and had substantial clearing.
(of course we should always listen to others….not what i am trying to say here)

  11. Well – I’d not say “should really listen” but there is great value in peer support at all points. It was one of the main themes of the Sophia panel last fall. Some I know are in formal peer groups, some more informal.

This is especially true of anyone teaching. However, not so long ago people stayed in their lineages and connected by letter. Some ideas have not caught up to what’s possible now yet.
